Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial herb, named for its characteristic lemon scent.
- Promotes relaxation and supports mood during stress (ref)*
- Supports mental clarity (at a lower dose) (ref)*
It has been cultivated and used for at least 2000 years in Central Asia, Europe, and Iran. It’s also known as bee balm or honey balm because its scent attracts bees (1).
Lemon Balm’s many benefits are due to its unique composition of flavonoids, essential oils, polyphenolic compounds, and triterpenes, among others. Extracts of its’ leaves are standardized to contain the very important polyphenolic compound known as rosmarinic acid (1). Rosmarinic acid is currently believed to be one of the primary constituents which benefits mood (2).
Lemon Balm Mode of Action
Lemon Balm promotes relaxation and supports mood during times of stress through interactions with GABA receptors (2).
While Lemon Balm is best known for its ability to promote feelings of calmness, lower doses may promote mental clarity (2).
